Indies keeping it real and joyful
Alan McGrath
National Organiser, Health Stores Ireland
Nobody can say they foresaw what was coming when one of Ireland's best-known health store chains pulled down the shutters after nearly fifty years of continuous trading. We can't understate the negative effect that this has had on our trade, but family-run businesses, where roots run deep yet can still turn on a sixpence, will continue to be the beating heart of the sector.
Authenticity, empathy, and passion are not commodities that can be bought or traded. An inherent formula of resilience, generosity, guile, and acceptance — served with a pinch of crazy, topped off with a dressing of self-deprecation and humour — is the best recipe for a successful, long shelf-life business bake.
In the wake of the departure of "one of the big guys", sisters (and brothers) are doing it for themselves. For those of us still standing in the independent specialist room, looking around at each other, it's the only viable path forward and I hope that innovators, brand-holders and suppliers see this too.
Where the winds of change blow faster than a Taylor Swift album release, the ability to adapt is crucial. Just like in the folklore of the Irish selkies, who transform from seals to humans, businesses must be ready to shed their old skins and embrace new forms. The closure of a major player in the health store sector is a reminder that even giants can fall, but it also opens up opportunities for the smaller, more agile players to shine.
Creativity, our community connections, and our unwavering belief in the value to society of what we offer are the roots that run deep. We may not have the marketing budgets of the big chains, but we have something they often lack- a personal touch and a deep understanding of our customers' needs. Whether it's partnering with local farmers to source organic produce or hosting wellness workshops with local experts, these connections are what set us apart and keep our customers coming back.
Collaborations, brotherhood and sectoral support are lifelines that will help keep us afloat. We are blessed to be part of a broad tent party, this publication included, that puts joy and belief into our sails.
The spirit of innovation is alive and well in the independent sector. And while change can be daunting, it also brings with it the promise of new beginnings. As we navigate this new landscape, let us not forget that it is in the shelter of each other that the people live. By supporting one another and staying true to our values, we can weather any storm and continue to thrive.
So, here's to the crazy dreamers, the doers and the believers in the independent health store sector. We should continue to dance to the beat of our own drum, fuelled by passion, resilience and a touch of charm. A good laugh and a long valerian-induced sleep are the two best cures for anything and in this business a good laugh is never in short supply.
